Synopsis

Pharmacognosy serves as the foundational discipline linking traditional natural remedies with modern pharmaceutical science. This field focuses on the comprehensive study of physical, chemical, biochemical, and biological properties of drugs, drug substances, or potential drugs of natural origin. It encompasses the systematic identification, authentication, cultivation, and processing of crude drugs derived from plants, animals, marine organisms, and microorganisms. By employing rigorous macroscopic, microscopic, and taxonomic evaluation methods, pharmacognosy ensures the quality, safety, purity, and standardization of natural raw materials.  Modern pharmacognosy integrates advanced phytochemistry and analytical techniques to isolate, characterize, and quantify bioactive secondary metabolites. These natural compounds—such as alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, and terpenoids—often serve as lead structures for novel drug development. Furthermore, the discipline validates traditional ethnomedical knowledge through evidence-based pharmacological screenings. As global interest in herbal medicines, nutraceuticals, and alternative therapies rises, pharmacognosy remains critical for sustainable bioprospecting, preventing drug adulteration, and discovering next-generation therapeutic agents.
